October 3-5, 2008
YMCA Hargis Retreat, Chelsea, AL

RESOURCE LEADER
Betty Brewer-Calvert, Director       Women's Ministries, Georgia Region

Betty Brewer-Calvert is a native Georgian, but she tried out some other parts

of the country for a few decades before "coming home" in 1998. She was born

into the Albany church (First Christian) where her father was pastor; but she now

makes her home in Atlanta and is a member of Decatur First Christian.
Raised mostly in Tennessee and North Carolina, Betty received her Bachelor of

Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University in 1981 and

her Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in the City of

New York in 1984. She was ordained and married the following year at

Park Avenue Christian Church in NYC (not on the same day!). She married

a young New Yorker whom she'd met in seminary. Eventually, she brought

him "south," and they lived in Texas and Tennessee before coming to Georgia.

James is now the pastor of Decatur First Christian. They have two teenage

children, Henry and Katie.  Betty enjoys reading, hiking, bicycling, music, art,

and travel.Betty's career since seminary has been varied - from staff member at

the Church World Service Immigration and Refugee Program to ministry in

the local church to grants writer and newsletter editor for an interfaith agency to

parenting and teaching preschool. She has led numerous retreats and workshops.  Georgia women may remember her portrayal of Mary in the 2003 regional women's retreat in Norman Park. She has been involved in women's ministries her entire life - as the daughter of an active CWF member, as a participant in six Quadrennial Assemblies, first as a youth steward and later as an interest group leader,

as a regional cabinet member, and as a local circle leader.
